EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – As the unemployment rate declines since El Paso’s peak of 14.8% (April 2020), jobs are filling as the economy recovers. However, this does not necessarily apply to industries with lower wages or without flexible remote benefits.

This is according to data collected from federal and state sources and relates to the Workforce Solutions Borderplex region, the El Paso MSA and the City of El Paso.

In June 2021, El Paso’s unemployment rate was 7.3% with a total of 26,643 unemployed. 10,700 non-farm jobs have been created since June 2020, and 800 of these jobs have been lost compared to the previous month.

Executives at Workforce Solutions Borderplex (WSB) said industries struggling to hire are primarily food service, hospitality, sales / retail and other positions that do not offer a living wage.

The June Labor Market Review presented by the WSB shows that the three supersectors with the most jobs for El Paso in June 2021 were:
1. Government
2. Trade, transport and public services
3. Education and health services.

The three super industries with the fewest jobs for El Paso in June 2021:

Another industry that is looking to hire as quickly as possible but is struggling to fill jobs is child care. According to data collected from the WSB, there are 2,000 child care workers in El Paso and an unemployment rate of 14.2%.

The data also shows that the median salary for educators is $ 18,500 ($ 8.90 hourly wage) and that nearly 150 educators are expected to leave the workforce within the next year. There have been 34 active babysitting jobs in the last 30 days.

The WSB added that an increase in the number of people having returned to work in recent months, resulting in a rapid delay for daycares to resume normal operations after being closed or have limited capacity for many months in due to the pandemic.
